A few months after “Sunflowers,” Squirtgun are back with a new single, “I’m the Ghost,” out via Pirates Press Records, and it shows a slightly different side of the band without losing what makes them Squirtgun. It’s still punk rock, still melodic, still unmistakably them, but the focus feels sharper this time around.
Right away, the song stands out for its tighter tempo and stronger melodic pull. The guitars feel more locked in, the rhythm section pushes forward with precision, and the whole track moves with a kind of confidence that suggests a band comfortable with where they are right now. It doesn’t rush, and it doesn’t drag. It just moves exactly as it should.
Compared to what many people are used to from Squirtgun, “I’m the Ghost” feels a bit more controlled and, in a good way, more deliberate. The melodies are front and center, but they don’t turn the song soft. There’s still bite in the playing and energy in the delivery, just framed in a way that feels more focused and, honestly, more mature.
Vocally, the track carries a sense of reflection without slipping into nostalgia. It feels personal but not self-indulgent, and the hook sticks because it’s built into the song rather than pasted on top of it. This is the kind of chorus that grows on you after a couple of listens instead of trying to win you over in the first ten seconds.
Production keeps things clean and punchy without stripping away character. You can hear every part clearly, but the song still feels like a band playing together, not a collection of polished pieces glued in a studio. That balance suits this version of Squirtgun well.
Taken together with “Sunflowers,” “I’m the Ghost” suggests a band that isn’t standing still. They’re not chasing trends, and they’re not stuck repeating themselves either. They’re just writing songs that feel natural to where they are now.
Different in tone, familiar in spirit, and genuinely enjoyable to sit with, “I’m the Ghost” is a strong step forward and a good reminder that Squirtgun still know how to keep their sound evolving without losing their identity.
