American Steel “Rotting”

Oakland punk veterans American Steel return with “Rotting”, a single tied to the long-awaited reissue of their self-titled 1998 debut album, coming out March 20, 2026 on Red Scare Industries. The song originally appeared on that 17-track record, long-lost and now finally shared again after the label and band pushed to make the classic available.

“Rotting” captures the band’s early East Bay punk roots with raw riffs, punchy tempos and that unmistakable DIY energy that defined the Gilman Street scene in the late 90s. The track sits comfortably alongside other influential California punk acts of the era while retaining a grit that feels earnest and grounded rather than polished.

This release is more than just nostalgia. It bridges the gap between American Steel’s early days and their continued relevance today. The reissue project has been in motion for years, with Red Scare pushing to reintroduce the band’s debut to both longtime fans and new listeners curious about the origin of a group that has remained active since the mid-90s.

Alongside “Rotting,” the reissue includes an acoustic B-side of “Long Day,” giving a fresh perspective on the classic material. It also arrives ahead of the band’s March tour dates in California, reaffirming that American Steel still show up with energy and integrity.
