Vancouver’s The Fomites are back with “Late Last Night,” the second single from Smoke A Joint About It, due October 1 via Kinda Cool Records.
If the first single suggested the album was heading in the right direction, this one confirms it. “Late Last Night” is everything you want from melodic punk rock. Fast, catchy, packed with hooks, and most importantly, spooky fun. The guitars keep the song moving from the first note, the chorus sticks almost instantly, and the energy never fades. It doesn’t try to reinvent anything. It simply reminds you why this style of punk rock has remained so addictive for decades.
For me, this single also arrived at the perfect moment. Some of you probably noticed I’d been quiet recently. I had to step away for a while because of some health related shits and listening to new music and writing naturally took a back seat for many weeks… Then I heard the two singles…
It reminded me why I started doing this and how fucking fun it is. Discovering new bands, rediscovering old bands, finding records that deserve attention and sharing them with people who might enjoy them as much as I do. That feeling came back immediately, and honestly, I can’t think of a better song/band to return with.
I also have to mention Kinda Cool Records once again. Their catalog has become one of the easiest recommendations I can make. Every new release feels carefully chosen, and every time I see their name attached to a record, I know there’s a good chance I’m about to hear something worth my time.
Now the wait is on for October 1. Smoke A Joint About It already feels like it will deliver on the promise of these first two singles, and it could easily end up as one of the standout melodic punk releases of the year, or at the very least one of the most fun to listen to.
