Chattanooga, Tennessee punk rock band I Before E deliver a blast of late 90s and early 2000s energy with Hurt Feelings, debut album released through Puppy Lover Records. This is one of those albums that immediately brings back the feeling of discovering melodic punk records when everything was fast, catchy, loud, and genuinely fun without trying too hard.
Earlier this year, the single “I.O.U.” already hinted at what the band were building, and thankfully the full album completely keeps that promise. From the opening seconds of “Bring Me Down,” the record locks into that nostalgic skate punk and pop punk spirit while still feeling alive rather than recycled. Fast riffs, strong hooks, and choruses that naturally stick after one listen.
What makes Hurt Feelings work so well is the variety inside a very cohesive sound. Tracks like “Changing the Bulb” push the pace harder, loud and energetic in the best way, while songs such as “Toxic Sand” and “Fowl” pull things back slightly without losing melody or charm. Even when the tempo drops, the album never loses momentum.
“Stand It” stands out as one of the strongest tracks on the record, balancing catchy melodies with that slightly rough edge that gives the whole album personality. Throughout the release, the band move naturally between skate punk speed, nostalgic punk rock warmth, and pop punk hooks without sounding like they are forcing different influences together.
The production also deserves credit. Everything sounds clean and punchy, but not over-polished. The guitars stay bright, the drums keep that energetic bounce, and the vocals carry enough grit to stop the record from becoming too glossy.
More than anything, Hurt Feelings feels fun in a very genuine way. Not ironic, not nostalgic bait, just a band clearly loving this style of punk rock and writing songs that make you want to replay the album immediately after it ends.
For anyone who misses that era where melodic punk balanced speed, hooks, and personality so naturally, Hurt Feelings absolutely delivers.
