A long-lost document of American punk history finally sees daylight: Hüsker Dü’s legendary January 30, 1985 show at First Avenue is now available in restored form, thanks to the archivists at Numero Group.
Jan. 30, First Ave Pt. 1 features five blistering tracks recorded during what many consider the band’s creative peak: “Every Everything,” “Makes No Sense At All,” “Terms of Psychic Warfare,” “Powerline,” and “Books About UFOs.” Captured on 24-track tape and thought lost in a 2011 fire, the recording has been remixed and remastered with exceptional clarity—arguably the best-sounding live document of Hüsker Dü’s SST era.
Beyond its historical value, the EP is a powerful listen in its own right: the songs tear out of the speakers, raw and melodic, brimming with the tension and urgency that defined Hüsker Dü’s sound. As critics have noted, this release isn’t just archival—it’s vital.
Jan. 30, First Ave Pt. 1 is the first installment in a series chronicling the full 1985 set. For longtime fans, it’s a long-awaited resurrection. For new listeners, it’s a perfect entry point into one of punk’s most essential bands.
